747 Cafe | Jalan Transfer

I have been searching for this restaurant for quite a while since they moved from YMCA, and fortunately I found it during my last trip back to Penang. I was told that YMCA increased their rent, so they decided not to renew their contract and moved here. But they are planing to move again, to Yesterday Club after 15th February 2013.

The place they rented is much more spacious compare to YMCA building, as it is a two storey buiding. However, the most difficult part for drivers is that there are no parking lots provided. It is exactly at the main road where cars are zooming in and out. That's why you see here are the cars parking on the road side but be warned: you park at your own risk and if you get saman-ed, please don't say I didn't warn you =).

You can see that the interior is much more brighter and modern.

Let's look at the food. Since three of us were there only, we can't order too much food. So, I ordered some of their well-known and popular dishes.
Inchi Kabin- RM15
On the outside it really looks like regular fried chicken (and maybe slightly dry even...), but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and the juiciness of the meat. It is as though they have marinated it for days! It's full of flavour, a very complex flavour; somewhat like the five-spices combined with cintan manis plus many many more layers you might discover as you eat. So you really don't want to miss this; for the price and the portion, I think it's fairly reasonable.

Curry Fish Head-RM42
This dish actually came last. First thought that came into mind: BIG! No wonder the person who took our order wouldn't recommend us to order more, because this portion is pretty large and it's enough to serve about four, maybe five persons. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you view it...), the size is fixed no matter how many persons are dining. The taste? Lot's of soup for you to enjoy, its sour and spicy. The fish meat is cooked just nice, not too hard, and although its quite fresh, I did wish that the meat would be slightly more fresher, then the dish would be perfect!

Stir Fried Broccoli-RM10
The photo above is about half the portion as we ate some of it already, we forgot to take pics, oopps! The dish tastes great, the gravy is actually “上汤" (soup) stir-fried together with the vegetables which makes it delicious; not like the average garlic stir-fried that we're used to.

We paid the bill and they returned our change in this plate. My, how long have it been since I last saw these kind of plates? Certainly brought back some nostalgic memories of childhood.

Anyway, for those who are interested in having their Chinese New Year reunion dinner here, they are open on 9th February and their menu is a one set course meal only. I would urge you to faster give them a call and make a booking, as there might not be many tables left. Nevertheless, its a good place to have dinner in case you're in Penang, and I'll be sure to come back and review their new place once they have moved.
