Restaurant Tua Huat | SS2

We went to try this restaurant that was recommended by my brother; it was near to his office and he happen to like the claypot yam yee mee very much. Restaurant Tua Huat is located in SS2, at the same row with the Nanking vegetarian restaurant towards the end, which is also near to Sin Chew Jit Poh and Lisa de Inn hotel.

At first glance, the place seem like very run down and old, and indeed it is. But this is exactly why you can find some great food here that are so hard to be found in other modern and commercialized restaurants.
Parang Fish Cake (西刀鱼片) - RM4.00 Per Piece
One of their famous dish is this Parang Fish Cake, and the picture is of one piece that is quite long actually. Although I'm not a fan of fish balls and fish cakes, my brother actually likes this very much. I guess it goes well with the noodles and yee mee in terms of taste.

Spring Roll (五香春卷) - RM9.00 Per Roll
We ordered the Spring Roll to try it out, but we were utterly shocked when it was served. We have no idea it was this huge! The portion for one roll is enough for 4 persons I think and it taste not bad, like the hokkien Lobak or Bak Kien but only just a few times larger. I personally still prefer the taste of Lok Bak.

Vegetable of the day (青菜)- RM8.00 (small) / RM10.00 (medium) / RM12.00 (large)
The vegetable of the day was Chinese spinach (番薯苗). It was nice, but just like any regular stir fried vege in restaurants.

Braised Pork Bee Hoon (扣肉米粉) - RM13.00 (Medium) / RM17.00 (Large)
Our first main dish is this Braised Pork Bee Hoon. I like this very much, absolute must try! The braised pork also tastes great and is very soft, but I think the dish is just slightly too oily. Maybe this is just the way to stir fry noodles in the old days, and I do like this dish very much... just that I might not be too fond to eat it everyday. The price is quite good for its value, and the smallest portion for this dish is medium, which should be enough for 2 persons.

Claypot Yam Pork-Rib Noodle Yee Mee (瓦煲芋头排骨伊面) - RM15.00 (Medium) / RM20.00 (Large)
Another main dish we tried out was this Claypot Yam Pork Rib Yee Mee. Again, the smallest size is medium, but we were also shocked to see how big it was! The potion is enough for 4 persons. The taste is good, but it doesn't have too much ingredients though; the yam was probably not cooked enough and it was quite hard. Overall, I still think this is a good dish to try out when you visit this place. Not many other places do offer this dish after all.

Will I come back to this place? Of course it would be a yes! Despite it being quite old, it actually feels quite warm and comfortable though... Strange, I know. But just remember, don't order too much on your visit here! :D

2nd Experience @ Mureung Dowon (CLOSED)

To much of my delight, I saw the groupon voucher for Mureung Dowon up for sale again in early March and I bought it immediately without a thought. This time the voucher was RM30 for RM50 worth of BBQ pork belly strips + 8 refillable side dishes, any additional orders are also discounted by 20%. We tried to book a place next week on a short notice, but it was full and we didn't think much about it. This time, we found that they have added their own menu book with more variety of food and with Pajeon too.Seem like they heard my suggestion! However, we didn't order it this time.:(
We finally had the time and arranged for a booking during last weekend. The place was like usual but with much more customers and it was quite noisy. However, I was very, very disappointed with my visit this time, let me tell you why.

Last time, even though we booked for two persons they still gave us a table for four, as the tables are divided by rooms and I really did appreciate the privacy they offered to us. This time however, we were seated together with another couple in a bigger room, and I have to say that both us and them were very, very quiet and very shy throughout the whole dinner. Anything you say can be easily heard by them seating just beside you.

Never mind that, but the biggest problem, was the food.

For those who haven't read my first post about Mureung Dowon, you can find it here:
http://sufentan88.blogspot.com/2011/11/mureung-dowon-korean-restaurant-jalan.html. This time the voucher didn't include the Doenjang Jigae and so it was cheaper; we were very full last time and so we didn't mind much about the stew anyway...

Once they served the pork belly, we were shocked. The portion was greatly reduced.( nd it stated in the voucher it is for potion of 2 persons)..just take a look at the comparison between the previous and the current portion below:
 (Top) BBQ Pork Belly, latest

(Top) BBQ Pork Belly as well, November 2011

Yes, I counted. Previously they gave 11 slices of pork belly + king mushrooms and one whole green onion. Now, they only gave 5 slices. And look at the quality of the meat, obviously the meat in 2011 had much less fat and looked much fresher than the ones we had now. Sensing that the portion may not be enough, we decided to order two additional steam rice, and one serving of Doenjang Jigae.
Not to mention, the lettuce was much fewer right now... Maybe they wanted to discourage wastage, we can understand.

The BBQ meat tastes much or less the same. Added with the sauce and wrapped together with the lettuce and side dishes, they still taste great.

Although the meat has been fully cooked, the side dishes still have not arrived yet. Bear in mind, I'm just simply uploading the pictures based on the order they were taken.

Waiting much longer later, finally our stew arrived first. It was boiling hot and tasted the same...
Doenjang Jigae- RM20.00
Since my last visit here, I have been to many other Korean restaurants and I have to say, RM20.00 for a Doenjang Jigae with only Tofu and Vegetables as the ingredient isn't worth it at all.

Finally the side dishes arrived at the same time as the stew. Not much different from the last time but it has one less side dish now. We also heard that you can only refill your side dishes for a maximum of 2 times only.

So there you have it. We were very impressed with Mureung Dowon in our first visit but this time, the reduction in the quantity as well as the quality of the dining experience is simply too much to accept. We can understand if prices of raw materials are going up and the restaurant may cut back on the portions a little... But the restaurant has simply set a standard too high for itself to follow and sustain its operations. Even the couple beside us were constantly compla.... opps, sorry, I shouldn't have eavesdropped! :)

Will I be back anymore? Probably will not until they sustain back their quality and services.

Haikara Style Cafe & Bakery | Subang Jaya

This is actually my second time here as I accidentally discovered this place and wasn't prepared to give it a proper review previously. This time, I am back fully armed. The place is just beside Subang Avenue, at the ground floor of the E-Tiara Serviced Apartments. For those who are not familiar with Subang Jaya, you can search google map for Carrefour Subang Jaya, and it is just two blocks away. Though I'm not sure about the situation in afternoon, parking there should not be a problem as there are some "illegal" parking spaces just outside of the shop. Many cars do park there since the road leads to a dead end.

Haikara Style Cafe and Bakery is run by a Japanese couple from Nagoya, and it gives you a homely feel to your dining experience. The staff are friendly and their menu offer a range of delicacies that are not found in other restaurants. The decor was set up nicely and its a good place for you to go for a cup of coffee or tea in the afternoons. They do serve a full lunch, tea break and dinner menu which I think is quite impressive for a small shop like this.

Here are all their own home-made bread and cakes.

Look us look at their full menu

Mushroom Cup Soup - RM3.90
A must try item, the soup is very fresh and tastes great. Although the portion is rather small, I would say that they did it right because appetizers are not supposed to fill your stomach. They do however leave you begging for more.

Croquette - RM9.90
Their Croquette, a famous Japanese appetizer made with minced chicken, onion and potato patty is absolutely delicious. Must try item, and it will open up your appetite without fail.

Chicken Tar Tar Don - RM18.90
Though the dish looks great, I would say that it is not meant for everyone. The chicken is topped with scrambled eggs and there is a very strong smell of vinegar. Not only that, the rice itself is also added with vinegar and that does not taste like the regular sushi rice that we are used to. The things that taste great are the chicken and the vegetables, because we Malaysians aren't used to eating such high amounts of vinegar in our dishes.

Fisherman Style Spicy Tomato Pasta - RM26.90
One thing great about this cafe is that their food does actually look identical to their menu! What you see, is really what you get and they don't skimp on ingredients. I like this pasta very much, although it doesn't taste like regular Italian pastas from Italiannes and other western restaurants. It has a strong taste of fresh seafood and also, it is VERY, VERY spicy. The wife of the storeowner did ask us about our tolerance to spicy dishes; we asked them to go on ahead and do what they do best. Just... prepare to drink quite a bit of water when you eat this dish :)

Previously in my first trip here we tried the Fish & Chips and the Chicken Cheese Roll. Both tastes really great! I'll be sure to come back again in the future to properly review those dishes and other items in the menu. Price wise, I think the dishes are priced moderately. But you do get a romantic ambiance suitable for a dinner with your loved one.

Breakfast in TTDI | Restoran Yong Len

This is a restaurant where I always come for breakfast after morning walk at Tmn Tun Park. This kopitiam has started their business for more than 25 years and the stall owners have much or less remained the same. The place had a humble start and was not very famous back then, but still the food was great and we kept coming back. Nowadays, Yong Len is absolutely packed throughout the mornings until the afternoon, especially the weekends. Many residents in Taman Tun eat their breakfast here after a morning walk at the nearby parks.

There have a few stalls like chicken rice, Wan Tan Mee, Char Keuh Teow, Kuih and etc. All the food were quite nice.
Fried Kueh Teow - Big: RM 5.00 / Small: RM4.30
The Char Kuay Teow here is one of my favourites. You may need to wait a while for the food but I think it is worth it. The flavour is overall very balanced, not too oily, and you can especially taste all the ingredients that are freshly fried from the wok.

.Curry Mee - Big: RM6.00 / Small: RM5.00
Yong Len's curry mee is my absolute favourite curry mee of all. The soup tastes great and I normally like to add some  chili and make it tastes even spicier. Although it may be pricey, but they do not skimp on the ingredients, therefore I would order curry mee 8 out of ten times when I come to Yong Len. The stall also sells Pork Noodle (Big: RM5.00 / Small: RM4.30) and Yee Mee (Big: RM6.00 / Small: RM 5.00)

 Prawn Mee - Big: RM5.00 / Small: RM4.30
The prawn mee is also another highlight of Yong Len. It is quite famous and I do like it very much. However, I found it incomplete because there is no hard boiled egg in the prawn mee. Maybe I should suggest to the owner next time or extra order a hard boiled egg.

Overall, Yong Len is a great place to take away food, and if you don't mind waiting for a table it is sure worth it to savor every dish the restaurant has to offer.

KLCC Isetan Senya Dining

Isetan’s I Love Food opened quite some time ago, at first glance I thought it wasn’t going to be very good like many food courts in shopping malls, but today me and my friend decided to try it out anyway. You can get there by taking the escalator near the Maxis Center down to lower ground, walk a little and it will be on your left.

Senya Dining’s concept is quite special. You can choose to buy the bento or sushi items being displayed and take away to be eaten elsewhere; they also offer to heat up your food in the microwave when you pay for it. Otherwise, you can choose to order the menu items and eat your food there. There are not a lot of seats for customers, and most of the tables are small, so it may be

Enough of the introduction…. So what do we think about the food??

Food wise, I think it’s great! Price is not too expensive like Umaiya at the fourth floor; it is priced more closely to Sushi Zanmai type of restaurants.

. Let’s see what type of food that we ordered…
Chicken Katsu Curry Set – RM18.80
We ordered the set menu where you can choose your donburi and it comes together with salad, miso soup, 2 pieces of sushi and edamane! My favourite! I felt like eating curry today so I ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry set. The curry tastes nice and hot, not too spicy, but it doesn’t have Potato and Carrots which I think the usual Japanese curry should have. They are not stingy on the portion either, the bowl of donburi is very HUGE and they give a lot of rice, too much for me to finish. On top of that, the two pieces of sushi are quite big and I can’t finish all of them. The salad is not to my liking as they use a wasabi sauce that tastes exactly like Japanese soya sauce + wasabi! It is not too spicy though, but I just cannot accept it as this is the first time I taste this kind of sauce.

Chicken Karaage Set – RM18.80
My friend ordered the Chicken Karaage set, and there’s only one word I can say…. Great! The fried chicken is crunchy, top of with special sauce and sesame seeds, and it tastes better than my Chicken Katsu. They also give many pieces of chicken as you can see in the picture and all of them are meat from the chicken drumstick or thigh parts.

Overall I think the food is great… in fact I’m still thinking of it when I go home! In total we spent RM39.86 inclusive of RM2.26 (6%) government tax. The Japanese green tea was free! I will definitely come back and try the other items on the menu. Stay tuned!

Tapis Rounge |The Strand Kota Damansara

Mom was meeting her friends and I tagged along since they are visiting a new place for food. Food! How can I not be there? So I was tagged along to meet her friends at Kota Damansara. It is located at The Strand which is known as Encorp Strand, probably everyone knows about it.

The place was quite nice and it looks like fine dining setting. The place was quiet when we arrived there around 1.30pm. I guess there will be crowd at night. That is why my mom's friend recommended here since they are having 50% discounts for selected food during lunch hour only.

Only 3 items in the menu are 50% discounts, so we ordered all of them each to share since two of mom's friends are on diet. We (Mom and I) will do the eating. :) I guess I was lucky I wasn't in strict diet for the moment.
Chicken Cabonara-RM23.90
Spaghetti with chicken in cream cheese sauce
This dish is used to be "Spaghetti with smoked duck in cream cheese sauce", they have replace the duck to chicken now. I guess duck meat is more expensive. The taste was not bad, very creamy with a few pieces of chicken meat. The potion was not very big, just enough for 1 person.

Penne Chicken-RM23.90
Pasta tossed with chicken fillet in a mildly spiced Tomato reduction.
The tomato paste taste very nice but the pasta were a bit tough. Just a bit disappointed with the pasta.

Green Curry Chicken-RM21.90
Thai Styled Green Curry Chicken served with white rice.
Totally a disaster. The green curry do not taste like curry at all. Tasteless and I didn't know what am I eating. Just very bad, they really need improvement in this, at least find someone who knows how to cook this dish. It will really give a bad reputation to the business.
